Understanding the importance of hard work and getting a job as a kid, Brian's parents encouraged him to take on a couple paper routes as a young teenager. Brian enjoyed visiting with customers, but did not necessarily enjoy getting up before the sun and going out into the cold. With that said, the Star Herald paperboy job had NO influence on Brian's eventual career in the media.
The desire to enter the publishing business began with a software program called The Print Shop by Broderbund. Brian began using the program to design customized stationery for business clients in 1980, beginning with his father's insurance business, The Hale Agency. From there, his client list grew to local businesses, eventually securing small contracts both in college and in the military.
Twenty years after publishing his first customized Stationery, Brian published The Internet Gold Pages (originally named World Wide Web Directories). The printed directory featured local panhandle businesses that had a current working website, with 10,000 copies distributed throughout WyoBraska in early 2000.
In 2009, The Gering Citizen sprung up as a new local alternative to the shrinking and outsourced Gering Courier. Co-founders Lisa Betz and Jim Headley approached Hale Multimedia about a partnership between our website company and their newspaper. The relationship went well beyond two companies working together. Brian and his wife, Andi, became an integral part of the fledgling newspaper taking on roles in writing, photography, editing, ad layout and website publishing as part of their staff from 2010 to 2013 when the Hales moved to Texas to expand the agricultural aspect of their multimedia business.
Brian joined the military in 1985 and signed up to become a Medical Records Administrator in the U.S. Army. During his military training, he learned the phonetic alphabet for radio communications, and proper handing of medical records under the old Privacy Act of 1974, which was eventually replaced by the new HIPAA laws.
Brian received the highest award as Honor Graduate of his class at The Academy of Health Sciences at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas in 1985. Prior to this advance training, Brian earned the highest shooting award in Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, hitting 49 out of 50 targets his first time handing any weapon of any kind. This earned him Expert status on the M-16 Rifle, which is similar to what civilians call the AR-15.
The radio training and handling of next of kin notifications were crucial in Brian's service as the MedEvac Dispatch Coordinator for Desert Storm, earning him two wartime medals.
Brian's highest medal came from Major General Travis during a simulated war exercise two years PRIOR to Desert Storm where he was credited for reprogramming the military's electronic messaging database system (dubbed 'email' the next year by AOL). His action saved the exercise from being a failure due to do the lack of rerouting filters on the messages, making it impossible for the different country's leaders to make timely decisions.
Being the one willing to be behind the microphone started at an early age for the Hales. Brian father, Howard, began his career in broadcasting in 1986 at the age of 50, but was known for helping out at the County Fairs, Horse Shows, Ropings and WNCC Cougar Basketball games as the P.A. Announcer.
As fate would have it, Brian followed in his dad's footsteps and continued the legacy. In the early 90's, Brian had the privilege of being the P.A. Announcer for the Cougars when they won Region IX back-to-back with NBA star Bobby "Action" Jackson running the court in Scottsbluff. This experience behind the microphone put Brian in front of some of the largest crowds in the panhandle when the entire auditorium was standing room only (before the renovation that took out a large section of seating).
The experience of being related to a broadcasting legend like Howard Hale was priceless for Brian as he was also able to learn from some of the very best media personnel in the business, from Ray Richards originally at KOLT radio, to Barb and Marty Martenson, Kevin Mooney and Dave Strang at KNEB, Brad Staman and Russ Garrett at KCMI, and several others. After working under Barb and Marty at KNEB in their glory years, Brian moved to Colorado in 1994 to pursue an opportunity to be a Sports Broadcaster for KSIR Radio in Brush / Ft. Morgan. The experience of setting up a mobile broadcasting system in the early 90's included a bulky antenna known as a 'marty', married to a bag phone and a lot of luck, in order to broadcast an outdoor baseball game in rural Colorado. Another media experience few will know how to do, or even remember.
Brian's media aspirations took him to Oklahoma in 1996 to work at a combination Radio/TV Station as a Sales and Marketing Representative for the Texoma region. It was during that stint that Brian began getting ideas about starting his own publishing company. By 1997 Brian left Radio/TV to publish The World Wide Web Directories for Lawton, Oklahoma and distributed 1,000 copies. Brian took his idea home to Western Nebraska, opened Hale Multimedia on Broadway & 20th in Scottsbluff and published The Internet Gold Pages for WyoBraska in 2000, distributing 10,000 copies of the golden directory around the panhandle. Due to the high demand for a local website designer, Brian shifted focus from printed directories to an online version and then continued to develop literally hundreds of multimedia websites for clients in 20+ states for the next 25 years and counting.
Brian's experience behind the microphone continued with several years of volunteering at the Scotts Bluff County Fair announcing the Livestock Shows. In 2004, the University of Nebraska Extension Agency awarded Brian with Volunteer of the Year.
In 2008, Brian was given the opportunity to do Local News for KCMI FM 96.9 at the time, now 97.1 FM. The experience of reading someone else's daily news was nerve wracking, but gave Brian the chance to gain more time behind the microphone. In 2024, after a 14 year hiatus from doing local daily news, Brian is back on KCMI every M-F around 7:25 am with Scanner News.
Brian started programming computers in 1978 when his dad bought him an Apple IIe for $3,800.
The late Mr. Ron Green is given credit for influencing Brian toward a career in computers at the early age of 12. Mr. Green was the Principal in Minatare, Nebraska when Brian was late coming back from lunch, which created an automatic 15 minutes after school in his office. The task was to type a few lines of code into the new TRS-80 computer that the school recently acquired.
However... at 9:30 p.m. Mrs. Hale called the school somewhat concerned. It seems Brian programmed the whole book of code in and they were killing Klingons at warp speed, after everyone had un-noticeably gone home!
Brian has been programming computers since, creating email filters, search engines, easy-update websites, inventory managers, shopping sites, streaming technology and more. Everything they create starts with custom database programming.
Andi and Brian Hale have developed over 1,000 website projects since 1998. Andi joined Brian in the business immediately after they were married in 2004. They work as a team with Andi handling database programming and graphical design, while Brian maintains the web server and handles marketing and promotion. As programmers, they also created their own Streaming Platform in 2020 (Digging Deeper TV and RADIO) when YouTube couldn't handle the truth. Their 2-hour live podcast has nearly 200 episodes, and has had listeners in every state in the country.
When Brian did a favor for a friend by putting the scanner signal online in 2009, he had no idea it would turn into what it has. That is saying alot, since Brian is a long-term visionary who is able to create things years ahead of their time. The Panhandle Scanner, once called Scotts Bluff County Scanner, continues to defy logic by reaching more people than ever imagined. More importantly, the scanner is not a cesspool of personal attacks, found on most social media pages. It's a place where decent people can follow what Hale Multimedia has to say. Although their have been several good (and a couple rogue) scanner admins over the years, the two people responsible for 99% of what is posted is either Andi or Brian Hale. Prior to 2022, Brian allowed other admins to assume the primary role, but since late that year, he has been managing it on a daily basis. In this short time, the page has TRIPLED and is reaching individuals all overNebraska, and the United States, with around 50% of followers being from the Panhandle.
